Wilbur Wright arrived in Kitty Hawk on September 12, 1900. Orville followed a few weeks later. Wilbur’s trip in Israel Perry’s fishing schooner was miserable and dangerous. “The sails were rotten, the ropes badly worn and the rudderpost half rotted off, and the cabin so dirty and vermin-infested that I kept out of it from first to last.,” was his description of the boat. They hit heavy weather crossing the Albemarle Sound, and as rain and waves washed over the boat, the schooner’s owner seems particularly upset. “Israel had been so long a stranger to the touch of water upon his skin that it affected him very much.\”
”},{“_type”:”wpvqgr_quiz_questions”,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_picture”:””,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_content”:”Who was Bill Tate?”,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers”:[{“_type”:”wpvqgr_quiz_answers”,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_picture”:””,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_answer”:”Assistant Postmaster of the Kitty Hawk Post Office.”,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_right”:false},{“_type”:”wpvqgr_quiz_answers”,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_picture”:””,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_answer”:”Wrote a letter to the Wright Brothers inviting them to the Outer Banks.”,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_right”:false},{“_type”:”wpvqgr_quiz_answers”,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_picture”:””,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_answer”:”First place Wright Brothers stayed when they arrived on the Outer Banks.”,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_right”:false},{“_type”:”wpvqgr_quiz_answers”,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_picture”:””,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_answer”:”All of the above.”,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_right”:true}],”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_addpage”:true,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_explanation_status”:true,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_explanation”:”
Bill Tate’s wife Addie was the town’s Postmistress. Since Bill was also a county commissioner and notary, he may have felt it was piling on to also be the Postmaster. The letter from Wilbur asking about conditions went first to Joseph Dosher, the chief of the Kitty Hawk weather station who assured him that the winds were constant. Langley was an internationally noted scientist who was convinced that powered flight was possible. He made two attempts at flight in 1903, on October 7 and December 8. Both were spectacular failures with the press in full attendance.Although very well-funded, Langley’s designs did not offer nearly the control of the Wright Flyer. Nor did he understand the stresses involved in a full-sized air craft. In 1914, Glenn Curtiss, an early aircraft pioneer, made changes in Langley’s design that enabled it to fly. The Smithsonian cited the Curtiss redesigned airplane as proof that Langley flew before the Wright Brothers. The Wright Brothers were understandably bitter and gave the Wright Flyer to the British government to display. It was not until the 1940s that the Smithsonian acknowledged the Wrights were the first to fly.
