On November 22, 1719 in the waters of Ocracoke Island, Lieutenant Robert Maynard of the British Navy, trapped Blackbeard, boarded his ship, and in a horrific battle killed him. Operating on the orders of Governor Spotswood of Virginia to kill or capture the pirate, Maynard proceeded to behead Blackbeard, mounted his head on the bowsprit of his ship, and sailed for Norfolk. It is still a matter of debate of Spotswood\u2019s order for the capture or death of Blackbeard was legal.\n”},{“_type”:”wpvqgr_quiz_questions”,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_picture”:””,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_content”:”In what year did Oregon Inlet open?”,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers”:[{“_type”:”wpvqgr_quiz_answers”,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_picture”:””,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_answer”:”1846″,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_right”:true},{“_type”:”wpvqgr_quiz_answers”,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_picture”:””,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_answer”:”1929″,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_right”:false},{“_type”:”wpvqgr_quiz_answers”,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_picture”:””,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_answer”:”1862″,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_right”:false},{“_type”:”wpvqgr_quiz_answers”,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_picture”:””,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_answer”:”1719″,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_right”:false}],”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_addpage”:false,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_explanation_status”:true,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_explanation”:”
September 8, 1846 to be exact. Storms were not named in 1846, but in September a tropical system spun for a while off Hatteras Island, pushing water to the west side of the sounds. Etheridge was born in 1842 on Roanoke Island, the property of John Etheridge. Etheridge was a remarkable person, joining Union forces during the Civil War and rising to the equivalent of a Master Sergeant. Returning to Roanoke Island he joined the Lifesaving Service. At the time that he was promoted to Station Keeper of the Pea Island Life Saving Station in 1880, no Black Americans were in a supervisory position in the Life Saving Service. The crew was made up of all African Americans to prevent a White from having to take orders from Etheridge. The station rescued the crew of the three-masted schooner Newman in October, 1896. 100 years later the decedents of the crew were awarded the Coast Guard Gold Medal for outstanding valor in a rescue.\n”},{“_type”:”wpvqgr_quiz_questions”,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_picture”:””,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_content”:”In what year was Dare County created?”,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers”:[{“_type”:”wpvqgr_quiz_answers”,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_picture”:””,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_answer”:”1876″,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_right”:false},{“_type”:”wpvqgr_quiz_answers”,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_picture”:””,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_answer”:”1919″,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_right”:false},{“_type”:”wpvqgr_quiz_answers”,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_picture”:””,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_answer”:”1783″,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_right”:false},{“_type”:”wpvqgr_quiz_answers”,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_picture”:””,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_answer”:”1870″,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_answers_right”:true}],”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_addpage”:false,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_explanation_status”:true,”wpvqgr_quiz_questions_explanation”:” Dare County was created from bits and pieces of Currituck, Tyrell and Hyde counties.
